Challenge

Avio is a leading company in the aerospace sector, specialising in the development and production of space propulsion systems. Among its most significant achievements, Avio is responsible for the Vega European launcher, used for missions by the European Space Agency (ESA). Like many companies in the high-tech sector, Avio has faced the difficulty of finding qualified talent. The talent shortage in the aerospace sector is a critical challenge, compounded by the need for highly specialised technical skills. Avio sought to resolve this difficulty by improving its appeal to young talent, particularly by engaging with students from ITS Meccatronico del Lazio, to train and recruit future professionals.

Solution

Manpower supported Avio in implementing the "Mapping the future" project, introducing dual apprenticeship in partnership with ITS Meccatronico del Lazio, which provides professional training through synergy with member companies, including Avio. This initiative offers students an employment contract even before obtaining their qualification, allowing them to combine theoretical and practical training. Through dual apprenticeship, students can work on real projects in strategic areas such as operations, developing technical skills and soft skills that prepare them to tackle future challenges.

Dual apprenticeship represents an innovative training model, widely used in northern Italy but less common in central and southern regions. This approach combines classroom learning with work experience, enabling students to apply their learning immediately. Unlike extracurricular internships, dual apprenticeship involves a genuine employment contract, with pension contributions and protections for both parties. This tool not only makes Avio more competitive in attracting young talent, but also helps improve the preparation of future professionals in the sector.

Results

Thanks to its collaboration with Manpower, Avio has activated 7 dual apprenticeships, with the aim of increasing this number by the end of the year. This strategy has proved successful, offering the company a competitive advantage in the labour market and ensuring students solid, high-quality technical preparation. Dual apprenticeship has proved to be an effective tool for addressing the talent shortage, ensuring Avio a workforce prepared to tackle the future challenges of the aerospace sector.
