Challenge

Hitachi Rail is a global player in the mobility sector, an integrated group capable of offering vehicles for railway transport, signalling systems and digital technology, Service & Maintenance activities, as well as turnkey solutions worldwide. In 2022, the company had 4,992 employees in Italy, of which 15.5% were women. Hitachi Rail wanted to tackle a two-fold challenge: implement actions to reduce the gender gap whilst at the same time responding to the talent shortage of STEM figures such as Project Managers in the sector. The shortage of these profiles is mainly due to the need for technical know-how and prior experience in the sector, which has resulted in a limited recruiting pool often confined to competitor companies. Hitachi Rail seized the challenge to change this rule by giving women over 35 who had left the workplace for various reasons the opportunity to be trained and pursue this career.

We promoted the High Speed Talent Women ReStart project with the aim of contributing to the value of female professionals even in an industrial sector that traditionally still sees a low percentage of female workers. This initiative, in line with our diversity and inclusion strategy, is essential to enable talented women to rejoin the workplace and, at the same time, contribute to reducing the gender gap particularly in our sector. We are aware of the significant work still to be done in terms of inclusion but we are proud to have taken a further and important step in this direction. — Cristiana Cusani, Human Resources Director at Hitachi Rail

Hitachi Rail Manpower Italia

Solution

Experis and Hitachi Rail built the project together with the aim of offering an opportunity to talented women over 35 with strong technical and managerial skills who found themselves away from the workplace and are currently unemployed. The inclusion programme provides, following the recruitment and selection phase, immediate employment by Experis on a permanent contract at the Hitachi Rail offices in Genoa, Turin, Pistoia and Naples. The seven selected candidates were placed as Project Planner or Project Manager Support and, after a training phase on the main methodologies, reference tools and specific company processes, began working on complex and international projects in the sustainable mobility field.

The project included:
- Identification of the professional profiles the company needed
- Development of a training plan focusing on sector-specific training
- Certifications via NFT for the candidates
- Identification of partners supporting the initiative
- Recruitment campaign
- Selection of candidates
- Delivery of training, with participation from Hitachi Rail as instructors
- Hiring

Results

The commitment of both companies, the collaboration and work carried out led to the creation of an "out of the box" project. The results include:
- Response to the business need for these figures
- Increase in gender parity
- Strengthening of employer branding
