This regulation defines the maximum number of hours an employee may work during a standard working week, typically distributed across five working days at eight hours per day. The 40-hour standard applies to most employment relationships in Bulgaria unless collective agreements or specific legislative provisions establish different arrangements for particular sectors or roles.

The rule is codified in Bulgaria's Labour Code, which was substantially amended in November 1992 to introduce the current 40-hour weekly standard and the corresponding eight-hour daily limit. These amendments represented a significant modernization of Bulgarian employment law at that time and remain the foundation of standard working time regulations today.

Employers in Bulgaria must ensure that regular working hours do not exceed 40 hours per week for employees under standard contracts. Any work performed beyond this threshold is classified as overtime and must be compensated according to statutory rates, typically at a premium above the regular wage. Payroll teams should track actual hours worked to distinguish between standard time and overtime, ensuring accurate compensation and compliance with labour inspectorate requirements. Collective agreements may establish shorter working weeks or different daily schedules, but cannot extend beyond the 40-hour statutory maximum without triggering overtime obligations.
