Standard work time

Standard work time in the United Arab Emirates is set at 40 hours per week. This regulation establishes the maximum number of hours an employee may work during a standard working week without triggering overtime compensation requirements. The 40-hour standard applies across most sectors, though certain industries and roles may have different arrangements under specific exemptions or collective agreements.

The rule is governed by the UAE Labour Law, specifically Federal Law No. 8 of 1980 (as amended), which sets out comprehensive employment standards for the private sector. The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation oversees enforcement and interpretation of these provisions.

The current 40-hour standard has remained consistent in recent years, though the UAE has periodically reviewed working hour regulations to align with international labour standards and economic conditions. In 2021, the government introduced a four-and-a-half-day work week option for private sector employees, effective 1 January 2022, allowing employers to adopt either the traditional five-day week or the compressed schedule while maintaining the 40-hour threshold.

Employers and payroll teams must ensure that employee contracts clearly specify working hours and that timekeeping systems accurately record hours worked. Any work exceeding 40 hours per week must be compensated as overtime at the rates prescribed by law, typically at 25 percent above the regular wage for the first two hours and 50 percent thereafter. Payroll professionals should verify that their systems correctly calculate overtime thresholds and that employment contracts comply with the 40-hour standard or document any agreed variations.
