Standard work time

Standard work time in the United Arab Emirates is set at 40 hours per week. This regulation establishes the maximum number of hours an employee may work during a standard working week without triggering overtime compensation requirements. The 40-hour standard applies across most sectors, though certain industries and roles may have different arrangements under specific exemptions or collective agreements.

The rule is governed by the UAE Labour Law, specifically Federal Law No. 8 of 1980 (as amended), which sets out comprehensive employment standards for the private sector. The law defines working hours, rest periods, and overtime entitlements for employees throughout the country.

In 2021, the UAE implemented a significant change to its working week structure. The government shifted the standard working week from Saturday–Wednesday to Sunday–Thursday, effective January 1, 2022. This change aligned the UAE's working calendar with international standards and improved work-life balance by aligning the weekend with Friday and Saturday. The 40-hour weekly limit remained unchanged, but the distribution across the week was adjusted to reflect the new schedule.

Employers must ensure that regular working hours do not exceed 40 hours per week for most employees. Any hours worked beyond this threshold typically qualify as overtime and must be compensated at a higher rate, usually 25 percent above the regular wage for the first two hours and 50 percent for additional hours. Payroll teams should track hours carefully, maintain accurate timesheets, and ensure compliance with overtime payment obligations. Employment contracts should clearly specify working hours and any agreed variations to the standard 40-hour week.
