Hourly minimum compensation

New Zealand's adult minimum wage is the lowest hourly rate that employers must pay workers aged 16 and over. As of 1 April 2024, the adult minimum wage stands at NZD $23.50 per hour. From 1 April 2026, this rate will increase to NZD $23.95 per hour. The minimum wage applies to all employees in New Zealand, regardless of industry or employment type, and covers ordinary hours of work.

The Employment Relations Authority and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) administer minimum wage compliance in New Zealand. The legal framework is established under the Employment Relations Act 2000 and the Wages Protection Act 1983, which set out employer obligations to pay at least the prescribed minimum rate.

The government reviews and adjusts the minimum wage annually, typically on 1 April each year, based on movements in the Consumer Price Index and average wage growth. The scheduled increase to NZD $23.95 per hour effective 1 April 2026 represents the government's commitment to regular wage indexation.

Employers must ensure all payroll systems reflect the current minimum wage rate and apply it to eligible workers. Failure to pay the minimum wage constitutes a breach of employment law and can result in significant penalties, including back-pay claims and fines. Payroll teams should monitor MBIE announcements for annual minimum wage changes and update employment agreements and pay schedules accordingly to maintain compliance.
