Colombia's employee pension contribution requirement mandates that workers contribute a percentage of their gross monthly salary to the country's pension system. As of 2024, the employee contribution rate is 4% of gross wages, with employers responsible for remitting these deductions to the designated pension fund administrator.
The pension system in Colombia operates under a mixed model where employees can choose between the public pay-as-you-go system (SPP) administered by Colpensiones or private pension fund managers (AFP). Regardless of which system an employee selects, the 4% employee contribution is mandatory and must be withheld from each paycheck. This contribution funds the employee's individual retirement account and is separate from the employer's mandatory contribution, which is currently 12% of gross salary.
The governing legal framework for pension contributions is established under Law 100 of 1993 and subsequent amendments, particularly Decree 1507 of 2014, which regulate the Colombian pension system. The Ministry of Labor and the Financial Superintendence of Colombia oversee compliance and administration of these requirements.
Payroll teams must ensure that the 4% employee contribution is accurately calculated on gross wages, properly withheld from each payment period, and remitted to the selected pension fund administrator by the established deadline, typically within the first ten days of the following month. Employers must maintain detailed records of all pension contributions and provide employees with annual statements confirming their contributions. Failure to remit contributions on time may result in penalties and interest charges assessed by the pension administrator.
