Hourly minimum compensation

Australia's National Minimum Wage sets the lowest hourly rate that employers must pay eligible employees. As of 1 July 2026, the National Minimum Wage is $26.44 per hour, equivalent to $1,004.90 per week before tax. This rate applies to most employees covered by the Fair Work Act, establishing a baseline compensation floor across the country.

The National Minimum Wage covers ordinary hours of work and applies to employees who are not covered by an applicable modern award or enterprise agreement that sets a higher rate. The rate is indexed annually on 1 July each year, with adjustments determined by the Fair Work Commission based on economic indicators and wage growth considerations. Employees covered by modern awards may be entitled to higher minimum rates if their award specifies rates above the National Minimum Wage.

The Fair Work Act 2009 and the Fair Work Commission establish and maintain the National Minimum Wage framework. The Fair Work Ombudsman administers compliance and enforcement of minimum wage obligations.

The 1 July 2026 increase to $26.44 per hour represents the most recent statutory adjustment. Previous increases occur annually, with the Fair Work Commission reviewing and setting new rates each financial year based on contemporary economic conditions and wage indexation principles.

Employers and payroll teams must ensure all employees receive at least the National Minimum Wage for ordinary hours worked, unless covered by a modern award or agreement providing higher rates. Payroll systems should be updated to reflect the current rate, and records must demonstrate compliance with minimum wage obligations. Failure to pay the National Minimum Wage constitutes a breach of the Fair Work Act and may result in penalties and back-pay claims.
