Standard work time

Brazil's standard work time is set at 44 hours per week, with a maximum of 8 hours per day. This rule establishes the baseline for regular employment contracts and applies across most sectors of the Brazilian economy. The regulation covers full-time employees and determines when overtime compensation becomes mandatory. Work performed beyond these limits must be paid at premium rates, typically 50 percent above the regular wage for weekday overtime and 100 percent for work on rest days or public holidays.

As of 2024, the Brazilian Senate continues to analyze proposals for reducing the standard work week, though no statutory change has been enacted. The current 44-hour standard remains the legally binding requirement.
